Bella Wines

2015 Sparkling Chardonnay PORTFOLIO

At Bella the underlying philosophy is to produce natural sparkling wines of exceptional quality.

Our blanc de blancs program is made in the traditional method, being bottle fermented, hand riddled and hand disgorged. Bella exclusively produces single vineyard, single varietal sparkling wines as we believe each vineyard has a different personality that comes through in the grapes produced.  We intentionally do not provide tasting notes as, just like when two people meet, what you pick up from someones personality may be different from ours.

The 2015 vintage in BC was exceptionally difficult for a natural sparkling wine producerWith a warm spring that extended straight through the summer, Bella started harvest on August 12th, 2015 – an unprecedented three weeks early.  Normally the Okanagan Valley crush begins in early September for BC sparkling wines but due to an unseasonably warm spring the entire growing season shifted.  The early ripening produced quality fruit but with much lower acids and therefore the focus for us was to pick grapes on acid rather than sugar if we were to maintain the characteristics of BC bubbles. Given this, it was not an easy year as we only had a small window to capture the fruits natural acid.

Crush in mid-August also presented new wine-making challenges for us: we had to crush grapes in a stainless steel bladder press outside when it was 35C (95F) on the crush pad.  During a drought we had to use precious irrigation water resources to hose down the press and the hoses to keep things cool.  Then the chiller broke so we needed to hose down the tanks as well.  Challenging indeed.

In prior vintages, we have offered single vineyard chardonnay expressions from Keremeos, Oliver and Kamloops.  Staying true to what the vintage provided, for 2015 we did our first blend.  Unfortunately, when we went to do our first field test of grapes in Oliver, BC on August 10th, 2015 the fruit was already at 18.5 brix and a pH of 3.2 with acids dropping fast.  The game was a foot.  Fortunately, our northern most vineyard in Kamloops was picked on August 18th, 2015 with a better pH.  This is when our strong belief in natural wines dictated our next step:  we could’ve added acid to the Oliver fruit and stayed true to our single vineyard portfolio but to do so would have gone against everything we believe; instead, after both vineyard specific juice had fully fermented individually, we blended the two sites to achieve the natural pH we were looking for and continue to produce a natural sparkling wine of exceptional quality.  We hope you agree with our choice.

For the 2015 vintage, all of the sparkling Chardonnay’s were feral (wild) fermented (e.g. without the use of nutrients or enzyme additions).  The juice was fermented to about one gram of residual sugar before being cold stabilized with the help of mother nature.  The wines were all cross flow filtered, then bottled and capped by hand for the second fermentation.  The wines will spend approximately eleven months on lees and are hand riddled, hand disgorged and finished brut natural in style with no dosage added.

2015 sparkling blanc de blancs – B2

THE VINEYARD AND HARVEST

As mentioned above, B2 is our first blend composed of chardonnay grapes from Oliver, BC and Kamloops, BC.  In addition to an early harvest, and extremely hot temperatures on the crush pad, we also got a new puppy “Buddha” in September 2015.  We named the winery after Bella so it was only fitting to name our first blend after Bella’s predecessor.  B2 = Buddha’s Blend.
