Bella Wines

2015 sparkling Rosé portfolio

At Bella the underlying philosophy is to produce natural sparkling wines of exceptional quality.

Bella is a sparkling wine house capturing the natural beauty of British Columbia fruit in every bubble. Made in the traditional method, being bottle fermented, hand riddled and hand disgorged, Bella exclusively produces single vineyard, single varietal sparkling wines.  For our rosé program we only use Gamay Noir, an under-appreciated BC grape.  At Bella, the goal is to make world class sparkling wines that are perfectly dry and left natural with no dosage so you can taste an elegant, genuine expression of the vineyards, and therefor micro-climates, we source from.

What difference can forty kilometers make?

West Kelowna, BC, or “Westbank” to the locals, sits at the base of Boucherie Mountain – a remnant of a strato-volcano.  Naramata, BC is rich with both fine lake and stream glacial deposits as well as glacial till.  Westbank gets the morning sun being on the west side of the lake.  Naramata Bench gets the hot late evening sun being on the east side of the lake.  With both sites on either side of Lake Okanagan would you be able to taste a difference in products made identically with the same grape varietal?

Welcome to Lake Okanagan – east side vs. west side

We make these wines identically:  the fruit is de-stemmed and pressed whole cluster, after spending about four hours on the skins to get just a hint of color, before being fermented in stainless steel tanks.  There is no malolactic fermentation and the juice was hand bottled at the beginning of November 2015.  After twenty days of hand riddling, twice a day, the rosés were disgorged in March of 2016.

So, the only difference comes from the vineyard sites themselves – approximately 40 kilometers apart as the crow flies.  You tell us if you can taste a difference in typicity in these three natural rosés …

2015 sparkling rosé brut natural – ORCHARD HOUSE

THE VINEYARD AND HARVEST

Orchard House Vineyard at the southern end of the Naramata Bench is less than an acre in size.  Located at the base of Munson Mountain, an extinct volcano, the soil is filled with volcanic rock, primarily dacite (felsic) in composition, and fine-textured glacial lacustrine sediments.  Interestingly enough, given the prolonged warm season in 2015, this site was dry farmed during the 2015 vintage which lent an intensity to the fruit.  Yield in 2015 was kept low at x.x tons an acre and harvest started September 12th at xx brix.
